The comments on the "road rage" article got me thinking. Do that many people really fly off the handle when someone flips them the bird? I'm kind of surprised. People are sharing these stories of being followed, tailgated, rammed, punched, kicked, even threatened with knives and guns, all for giving someone the finger. I mean, it's just a gesture , for crying out loud. If someone flips me the bird, I'm really not likely to do anything, except maybe flip the bird right back or stick out my tongue. Seriously, what is it about a simple gesture that makes people fly into a violent rage? I just do not get it, at all.

I just shrug and move on with my day, happy that I don't get mad at trivial things like that. My wife will talk about it for the next three days.

People get too emotionally invested in these kinds of things. They all need to learn how to just say fuck it and go on about their day.

Also, i like to give people the thumbs up and smile at them when they flip me the bird. Makes them extra pissed off....

When I was a young Golem (~12) I flipped off some full grown man that drove past me and covered me with a deluge of slushy water. He turned around to yell at me and threatened to beat my ass. I took off running.

Some guy wanted to kick my mom's ass once when she "cut him off" by signalling moving into his lane and then signalling and exiting the highway. I can remember him yelling at her while I sat in the backseat. He kept saying, "Get out of the car!" and she would say, "No, I am not getting out of this car!" Eventually he went away and we got out and used the restrooms.

What's amazing is that people will fly off the handle, and they will do so, EVEN WHERE THERE'S A HIGH LIKELIHOOD OF THE OTHER PERSON BEING ARMED!

You're pissed off someone flashed their brights because you made a dipshit move and almost caused a crash? And then you get pissed off at that someone? How do you know they aren't going to just shoot you and be done with it?

Don't piss other people off, and be armed in your own defense.

I don't get angry when someone gives me the finger because, well, I've never (to my knowledge) been on the receiving end (I'm a giver, what can I say?)!

The reason I say "to my knowledge" is because once I try not to be a dick to other people and if I do so, NO REGRETS!!!!!

See, I feel like you have absolutely nothing to do and nowhere to go when you do something like that. Like the people who stand in line at supermarkets arguing about expired coupons.

There are things I'm far more worried about than a gesture. Last time someone flipped me the bird was because I was, from the right lane, taking my dear time to turn on a right corner, and I was only doing so because there was a guy crossing the street.

Figuring my options were waiting for the guy to finish crossing or running him over, I decided I wasn't really on a hurry, tough shit if the guy behind me was.

This is why I wag my finger condescendingly instead. It's totally disarming.

Yes. I was rather recently involved in an accident because I changed lanes in front of a guy (not cutting him off, just signalling and safely getting in front of him), which angered him for some reason, so when I safely signaled to move back right (after passing the slower traffic) he flew past me, cut me off by less than a car length, and then slammed on his brakes (middle of the highway at 65mph...).

So yes, people get aggravated while driving for the dumbest things, usually because they too are dumb and / or ignorant.

Its not the bird that gets me, its the dangerous driving. i.e. people turning into my lane while im there because they need to get over they are coming whether I like it or not (and just assuming I'll brake/move) or brake checking, or speeding around and then brake checking, etc, etc. There is a part of my brain that screams: You can't do that! That's illegal, dangerous and wrong! and I will find a way to take back control of this situation. Truth is, there is very little you can do, but I think we as people don't like the notion of being helpless...especially when we feel in control behind the....well...controls. Road rage is an irrational grasp at regaining control any way possible.

One of my ex's friends husbands got arrested for flashing a Glock at a guy who had flipped him off. Turned out that the guy was an off duty cop.

It was really weird because the guy I knew was incredibly shy and docile in normal life.

Some people just feel more anonymous or protected in a car for some reason. Most people wouldn't start yelling HEY ASSHOLE when someone in front on them in a line at a store is going slowly, but they'll happily lay into their horn when someone doesn't turn the instant they thought it was possible.

I feel your pain!!

Here in São Paulo, this is more common than ever...

I'm consider myself a educated person on traffic, stop for pedestrian, respect the lane and surprise!!! I use my turn signal!

But there one thing that make me furious... those "smart guys" that uses the shoulder lane in a slow traffic and tries to merge in your front when it ends... More than once I forced someone out of the road (at about 5mph) because I NEVER give the space for those assholes!

I do that too, it helps that the Tipo has a lot of pick up to block those people off. I don't mind when someone's trying to merge in front of me because they need to merge for a corner down the line, but when it's just to pass people, I'll block them off.

I used to get really pissed when someone did something stupid on the roads, but not so much anymore. I guess years of driving in Pittsburgh traffic, seeing that stupid shit everyday will calm you down.

I've been on the receiving end of some road anger issues 1 time. Guy cut me off, so I flipped him off and he followed me into my driveway. Shit got real, pretty fast that night.

I've pissed off a fair number of people who were more than deserving of the bird. One guy in particular was in a beat to shit GMC Safari and trying to drive it like it was a Corvette. Weaving in and out of traffic, switching lanes with no blinker, and finally cutting me off causing me to come within inches of his bumper. I swerved around him at literally the last second and gave him a well deserved finger. He then proceeded to follow me for a number of miles while simultaneously cutting me off even more. It was getting scary at one point so I found a opening in opposing traffic and shot into a side street where I knew he couldn't get over in time. I was furious at this point because the guy had his window down when he could pull along side me and was yelling threats at me and my kid brother who was 10 at the time. I called the police to report him for reckless driving and road rage but they told me that he was now out of their jurisdiction so there was nothing they could do I'm still pissed about that whole situation and much more cautious as to who I flip the bird now.

About 3 years ago, when my father, a couple of his friends and I went on a road trip to Lake Placid, some random Passat overtook our convoy, one car at a time without signalling, on a double yellow, and flipped the bird at my father and sped off on the wrong lane.

I got a shot of the said Passat.
